Chutney Chicken Masala

I always have a story with all my recipes , this one too has a cute one …..will try and keep it short … I came back from school to see a msg from Nihla ( admin of UAE food guide ) asking whether , I can do cook along tomorrow , I can never say to UAE Food guide friends as I always feel bad that I am not able to attend their events due to work commitments and whenever possible I love involving myself in doing something I enjoy the most that is cooking ….

Moving to the recipe , I added capsicum and spring onion to enhance the taste and for health factor I added little spinach , you can omit any ingredient that you don’t prefer and add 2 tbsp curd or cream to give extra creamy texture , This recipe has no spices and everything that I added was freshly grounded spices that for sure gave a fresh taste to the dish and was enjoyed by my family especially my kids


  • Boneless chicken or mutton or kheema or prawns or mixed vegetables – 500 gms
  • Chopped Spinach – 1/2 cup
  • Mint leaves – 15 leaves
  • Coriander leaves – 3/4 cup
  • Spring onion – 1/2 bunch
  • Chopped capsicum – 1 medium size
  • Chopped Onion – 2 no.
  • Chopped tomato – 1 ( big )
  • Green chilies – 2 ( you can add more if you want it spicy )
  • Chopped Garlic – 3 cloves
  • Chopped Ginger – 1 inch piece
  • Oil – 2 tbsp plus 4 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Peppercorn – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – 15 to 20
  • Lemon juice – 2 tsp
  • Salt to taste


  1. Heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan add cumin seeds, peppercorn , chopped ginger and garlic pieces, add green chilly, chopped onions, cook this for a minute , then add coriander leaves, mint leaves, spinach , capsicum , spring onion sauté it for a minute then add tomato , saute for another minute , cool the mixture and grind it to paste , chutney is ready
  2. In the same pan add the remaining oil add curry leaves and then add chicken pieces and saute till the raw smell of chicken goes that takes 5 to 7 minutes then add chutney along with salt and cook in high flame for another few minutes , once oil comes in the sides of the pan add 1 cup water and cook for few minutes add lemon juice and remove from fire
  3. Serve hot with rice / ghee rice / paratha / appam / Dosa/ Chapati


    This dish taste best with prawns and even with mutton ( remember to pressure cook the mutton before adding the chutney )

    You can avoid sautéing the greens and onions and directly make the paste but you need to cook the chutney more to remove the raw smell so best is to sauté , which makes cooking easy

    You can add curd or cream or cashewnut paste to enhance the flavour of the dish

    You can add 1/2 cup green peas while sautéing the greens and make paste , it reduces the spiciness of the dish

    You can add 1/2 tsp Garam masala powder , or add whole spices ( 1 small cinnamon stick , 2 cloves , 1 cardamon )

    I took 25 minutes to make this gravy
