Nawabi Chicken

Vegetarians can substitute chicken with paneer or potato or mix mixed veggies but don’t fry the paneer as it becomes hard

I liked the recipe instantly and when was just starting to make and generally asked my friend how it would be….she said don’t try……I had no other choice so told her I will make and then get back with the review …..hubby and kids loved the gravy… was quite Nawabi in taste and texture…..


  • Chicken – 1 ( cut into 16 pieces )
  • Oil – 1/2 cup
  • Ghee – 2 tbsp
  • Ginger garlic paste – 1 tbsp
  • Brown onion – 1 cup ( fry the onion in oil till light brown in colour )
  • Blanched almonds- 15 ( blanching means removing the skin )
  • Cashews – 15
  • Poppy seeds or Khus Khus – 3 tsp ( optional )
  • Melon seeds – 3 tsp
  • Fresh Tomato paste -1/2 cup
  • Cream -2 tbsp
  • Whole garam masala – cardamom -2,cloves – 2 ,cinnamon -1 inch
  • Chilli powder – 1 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder -1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
  • Garam masala powder – 1 tsp
  • Salt to taste


  1. Boil almonds,cashews ,Khus Khus and melon seeds in 1 cup water for 10 minutes and make a paste with brown onions
  2. In a pan add 1/4 cup oil ,add chicken and little salt ,cook the chicken for 5 minutes then add ginger garlic paste cook for another few minutes till the raw smell of the chicken goes…remove from fire
  3. In another pan add remaining oil and ghee ,add whole garam masala ,then add tomato paste ,cook till oil comes out,add the grinded onion paste along with chilli powder,coriander powder and turmeric powder .Add salt if required
  4. Cook for few minutes add the fried chicken ,fresh cream and garam masala powderCook in slow flame for another 10 minutes.
  5. Garnish with almond slices and serve hot with roti or naan or pulao
